Why we care about the environment
Surfing in dirty ocean water is a complete letdown. Fishing in a stream choked by run-off won’t do. Picnicking in a trashed park is no fun. It’s hard to enjoy the outdoors if we don’t act responsibly and keep our favorite places safe and healthy. Yet everything we do impacts our planet—even winemaking.
The spirit of Bluebird—beautiful, sunny days spent outdoors—is premised on a healthy environment. When we make wine we change our environment, but we believe that we can still be a force for good.
To help mitigate our impact, we carefully weigh the earth costs of each decision, execute creative alternatives to waste issues and choose to work with businesses that share our sustainability mindset and standards. In short, a commitment to sustainability is not a policy or a framework, it's part of our DNA, and as such the commitment influences every decision we make.
||Where we're doing well
||Where we need to improve
|Farming, grape harvest
||We do our best to partner with farmers that are responsible with their use of water and do not use excessive chemicals in the farming of their grapes.
||We don’t grow all of the grapes that go into Bluebird. As we grow, we’d like to take on more of the farming practices so that we can ensure we’re using only farming practices that live up to our standards.
||We produce our wines at Bin to Bottle which is a CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmer) production facility. There we are able to take advantage of their low flow water system and state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant.
||Continue to cut down our water use per bottle of wine. Encourage Bin to Bottle to look at alternative ways to be more sustainable through solar panels, gravity flow systems, etc.
||Bluebird wines are stored in a solar powered, climate and humidity controlled facility.
||Work with our case storage warehouse to improve their facilities to reduce their energy use by being more efficient.
||Our office is a beautiful reclaimed space in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Our neighbors and landlords re-built the space ensuring environmentally sensitive building practices like using reclaimed materials and low VOC paints. They were later recognized as a Sonoma Valley Green Business by the Sonoma City Council for their commitment to building green.
||A new energy efficient, LEED certified, pre-fab location that is self sufficient with a beautiful tasting room for guest to enjoy our delicious wine.
